RoadToEverest Log #11

After our stunt at Chhukung Ri, the next day was a power packed trekking day.

Ama Dablam – The Mother’s Necklace

We rose up early for breakfast as usual to have Tsampa porridge, a simple sherpa breakfast and left our lodge at Chhukung to climb upwards towards our next destination. It was getting harder to climb. We thought we weren’t prepared. But we had to move.

Views all the way down to Tengboche

This was our first high pass of the trek and we were to summit the low point of the Kongma La to cross over to the Khumbu valley. As we trekked from 4700m, we gained altitude steadily, passing by beautiful green meadows above the Chhukung valley and soon scrambled up some steep rocky mountain path. At the mid point, we stumbled at the foot of a big black wall of rocks besides the Kongma Lake. One small misstep here could cost us our lives.

Descending to the Khumbu Icefall

From here, it is an almost vertical climb up to the top. The accomplishment of summiting the high pass was quickly put to defeat after staring at our path to descend to the other side. Each step down was a decision maker and by the time we were off the mountain, there was the icy Khumbu Glacier staring at us. The icy and rocky glacier had boulders the size of a building. It cracked and melted as we stepped on, and we really didn’t think we would make it out of there. Somehow, we made it to Lobuche village by sundown. It was more than what our bodies could take at that point of time.
